James Jean
Taipei, Taiwan

James Jean’s visual universe is one of dream narratives rich in floral motifs, twisting vines and fairy-like characters, elegant blends of influences from East and West. His artistic career bridges commercial and fine arts, with award-winning creations ranging from comic covers and movie posters to large-scale murals and video creations.

Born in Taiwan and raised in New Jersey, Jean studied at the School of Visual Arts, New York, before working as a cover artist for DC Comics and illustrator for clients including Rolling Stone, Time or The New York Times. He has received numerous industry prizes including four Harvey Awards and seven Eisners, and collaborated with the luxury brand, Prada, among others.

Jean’s personal artwork draws on Chinese silk scroll paintings, Japanese woodblock prints, Dürer etchings and personal sources of inspiration including found photographs, dreams and introspection. His delicate, colourful creations have featured in group shows across the USA and beyond, including at prestigious venues such as MoMA New York, the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles and Yokohama Art Museum, Japan. He has hosted solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo, and in 2019 presented a retrospective show at the Lotte Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea.
