Heshka was born in Manitoba, Canada, and grew up in Winnipeg. During the long prairie winters he used to draw, build cardboard cities and shoot Super 8 films, inventing new universes that would later feed into his art. He graduated in Interior Design from the University of Manitoba in 1992 and worked in the profession for a number of years before moving into illustration. His artwork has appeared in publications including Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal, Esquire and The New York Times.
Pulp magazines, natural history and surrealism have all played a part in shaping Ryan Heshka’s style. His comic books, The Mean Girls Club and The Mean Girls Club: Pink Dawn, ooze the pin-up girl chic evident in many of his artworks, while more recent paintings are stream of consciousness creations based on dreams or vague memories. Heshka has exhibited in Canada, USA, Denmark, Germany and Italy, among others, while a monograph of his work, Fatales: The Art of Ryan Heshka, was published in 2017.
